Hotel Roanoke

$25.00

Artistically etched crystal glassware.

Historical biography by Nelson Harris:
The Hotel Roanoke is as old as the city itself. Both came into existence in 1882, with the hotel officially opening on Christmas Day. Built by the Norfolk & Western Railway to bring first class accommodations & fine dining to the city where it was headquartered, the Tudor-style hotel became then & remains today a signature architectural structure defining Roanoke’s skyline & cultural life. The original hotel caught fire in 1898 but reopened the next year. In the decades that followed, Hotel Roanoke was enhanced & enlarged. During World War II, the Pine Room served as an officers’ club. In 1989, the railroad divested itself of the hotel by donating the property to Virginia Tech. Through a spirited public campaign, known as Renew Roanoke, & a partnership between Tech & the City of Roanoke, the Grand Old Lady on the Hill was re-imagined & reopened in 1995 as a destination hotel & conference center. Through her grand entrance have come Presidents & entertainers, wedding parties & honeymooners, international travelers & locals all seeking what the Hotel Roanoke has been providing for over a century – the best in Virginia hospitality & elegance.
